Do You Know What You Really Want?
Mindset, Networking Oct 25, 2020
Do you know what you want and need in your business? Like, really specifically know your detailed needs?
Being really clear on your needs is critical to reaching your goals.
I have a friend who had a financial need. Another friend approached that person and asked what they needed.
The friend responded, “I’m not quite sure. I think I need….”
Our mutual friend was going to write a check to assist but decided against it because the person wasn’t clear on exactly what they needed.
Moral of the story: Be clear and specific on what you want and need.
How many times are you in a networking event, and someone asks, “How can I best support you? Who are you looking to meet?”
80-90% of the time when I ask that question, the person will respond with “Wow. I don’t know.”
So even though my intention was to assist and make a connection, I walk away because I don’t know how to help them. I don’t know how to best support them because they aren’t clear about what they need.
I want you to take some time right now and get very, very clear on what you need to move your business forward. Not so you can walk around and ask everybody for help. Instead, so that when the opportunity arises for someone to help you, you know exactly how to respond to the question, “How can I support you?”
There will come a time soon that you will meet someone that can connect you with your next potential big, ideal client or a resource that you desperately need. But if you don’t know what to ask for, then no one will know how to help you.
When a gift, a resource, or a financial amount is given to someone who's not clear on what to do with it, it gets wasted. If you're clear, you know exactly what to do with it, and the person will feel good about providing that gift.
So, are you really clear about what you need, what you desire, what you want, who you need to meet?
It’s important to be very specific, not just, "I'm looking for people in the banking industry."
Instead, "I'm looking to meet Debra Brown at ABC banking. She's in the loan department."
When you are that clear, you're in the best position to ask.
You can even take it a step further.
I remember a time when someone wanted to buy something from me. They asked me about my pricing. And at that time, I hadn't gotten super clear. When they asked me how much would it cost to do X, Y, Z, I had to think about it.
And I know at the moment that it took me to think about it, I missed that opportunity.
Guess what I did the very next day?
I got really clear on all my packages, all my pricing.
And to this day, if you ask me what something is, I know exactly how to present it. I know exactly how to communicate it in a way that makes someone say yes.
And so, not only when we're not clear on what we want, it not only causes us to miss opportunities for multiple things, it’s also costing you sales.
One of my favorite - and least favorite - phrases is “How you do anything is how you do everything," If we're not clear in this area, we're probably not clear in other areas in our business.
So I invite you to take some time, figure out what you want.
